Small Island
Big Song
Small Island Big Song is an international music, film, and performing arts initiative that brings together artists from island nations across the Pacific and Indian Oceans to celebrate cultural heritage and raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing ocean communities. Founded by BaoBao Chen and Tim Cole, the project connects musicians, storytellers, and cultural leaders through collaborative performances inspired by the sea, traditional knowledge, and island life.
Its relationship with coral reef awareness is rooted in a shared concern for the health of the oceans and the communities that depend on them. Through music, film, and live performance, Small Island Big Song highlights the impacts of climate change, sea-level rise, biodiversity loss, and the degradation of marine ecosystems, including coral reefs.
By amplifying Indigenous and local voices from island nations, the project creates a powerful cultural narrative that connects environmental conservation with identity, heritage, and community resilience.
Through its award-winning albums, documentary film, and international performances, Small Island Big Song transforms environmental issues into emotional and accessible experiences. The project inspires audiences to recognize the cultural and ecological importance of healthy oceans and supports a global conversation about protecting coral reefs and marine ecosystems for future generations.
