Jodi
Lomask
Jodi Lomask is a choreographer, sculptor, director, and founder of Capacitor, the San Francisco-based performance company she launched in 1997. Through dance, motion sculpture, sound, and immersive stage environments, Lomask explores the intersection of science, environmentalism, technology, and the human body. Her work often grows from collaboration with scientists, engineers, designers, dancers, circus artists, and composers, translating complex natural systems into visceral experiences that audiences can feel as well as understand.
Lomask’s connection to coral reef awareness is especially visible in Okeanos, Capacitor’s 2012 ocean-focused performance. Inspired by the Coral Triangle and California’s kelp forests, Okeanos incorporates choreography, sculptural apparatus, video, conservation partnerships, and the voices of marine scientists Dr. Sylvia Earle and Dr. Tierney Thys to present the ocean as body, environment, resource, metaphor, and force.
The work addresses threats including coral extinction, plastic pollution, overfishing, oil spills, and climate change, while using performance to inspire ocean stewardship. In this way, Lomask’s art becomes a bridge between science and emotion, inviting audiences to recognize the fragility of marine ecosystems and deepen their commitment to protecting coral reefs and the ocean systems that sustain life.
