Yip Tong
Kim Yip Tong is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker from Mauritius whose work explores the relationship between ecology, identity, and collective human experience. Through painting, animation, film, and immersive installations, she creates sensory narratives that reflect on environmental fragility, coexistence, and the urgent realities of climate change.
Through public engagements and collaborations with artists and scientists, Kim Yip Tong creates immersive experiences that help audiences emotionally connect with the hidden life of the ocean and the threats facing coral reefs worldwide.
Her relationship with coral reef awareness is powerfully expressed in projects such as “Anthozoa,” an artistic ode to coral ecosystems and marine biodiversity, the work addresses coral bleaching caused by rising ocean temperatures and pollution.
In collaboration with ocean scientists, “Coral Reef Futures” explores how storytelling and speculative imagination can help us envision hopeful futures for coral reefs.
While “Pie Dan Lo (Black Tide)” is an animated short documentary born from the Wakashio oil spill, transforming testimonies from affected communities into a poetic reflection on environmental loss, collective action, and the fragile relationship between Mauritius and its ocean ecosystems.
Through her art, Kim positions creativity as a form of environmental resistance and compassion, encouraging reflection on humanity’s interconnected relationship with marine ecosystems. Her work highlights both the fragility and resilience of coral reefs, inspiring awareness, empathy, and action toward ocean conservation.
