Juli
Berwald
Juli Berwald is an ocean scientist, author, and science communicator whose work bridges marine research and public understanding of ocean conservation. After earning a Ph.D. in ocean science and developing mathematical models to interpret satellite imagery of the ocean, Berwald transitioned into science writing, contributing to publications including National Geographic, The New York Times, Nature, and Science. A lifelong advocate for ocean literacy, Berwald returned to her passion for marine ecosystems through her writing, first exploring the fascinating world of jellyfish and later focusing on coral reefs.
Her acclaimed book, Life on the Rocks: Building a Future for Coral Reefs, examines both the ecological importance of coral reefs and the innovative efforts underway to protect and restore them in the face of climate change.
Through her storytelling, Berwald transforms complex marine science into compelling narratives that inspire curiosity, hope, and action. Her work highlights the beauty, resilience, and vulnerability of coral ecosystems, helping audiences connect emotionally with the urgent need for ocean conservation and the preservation of coral reefs for future generations.
Berwald is also collaborating with Music for the Ocean, an innovative concert experience that brings the ocean into the concert hall through the powerful combination of music, science, and storytelling. By creating immersive connections between audiences and marine ecosystems, the project expands public engagement with ocean conservation and reinforces the message that protecting coral reefs and ocean life requires both scientific understanding and emotional connection.
