Vanessa
Barragão
Vanessa Barragão is a Portuguese textile artist whose work is deeply inspired by the ocean, nature, and the ecosystems of her coastal hometown of Albufeira. Using handcrafted textile techniques such as crochet, latch hook, embroidery, and weaving, Barragão creates large-scale organic artworks that resemble coral reefs, underwater landscapes, and marine life.
Her relationship with coral reef awareness is rooted in her commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. Influenced by the environmental impact of the fashion and textile industries, Barragão began creating artworks using reclaimed yarns and textile waste, transforming discarded materials into immersive pieces that celebrate the beauty and fragility of marine ecosystems.
Through her coral-inspired installations, she raises awareness about ocean pollution, biodiversity loss, and the urgent need to protect coral reefs and coastal habitats.By combining traditional craftsmanship with ecological storytelling, Barragão’s work creates an emotional connection between audiences and the natural world, encouraging reflection on sustainability and the preservation of the oceans.
